2 Wood Masks

    Yes, African, and probably fairly recent. But based on actual traditional masks, so not exactly the typical souvenir "airport art."

    The first is Punu, from Gabon. It's a female ancestor mask, representing the spirit of an ancestor, and idealized female beauty.

    The second is Lega, Bwami Society, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and is used in initiation ceremonies. They often are not made to be actually worn as a face mask, but to be hung, carried, or displayed during the initiations.
