    Hello,
I am looking for suggestions about where I could find some information on this painting, i.e. how old it it and who's it by. Its very big about 1.5 metres x 1.5 metres approx. I thought I could see some kind of signature/mark a few years ago but I cannot locate it again, maybe I need a better light.
I have attached an image of it.
The painting is in the same family in Italy for approx 60-80 years.

    Thanks

Subject is Socrates and could very well be a copy of something.

Was Socrates known to have played a Lyre?
I can't find any images of him with an instrument.

Could be Homer, the Blind Bard.

I think you're right. Apologies for the mis-direction.

Ok, Homer and a lyre are closely linked. I like it.
Now can the painting be roughly dated?
Or can you direct me to a website or society which may be able to help or more?

I think, stylistically, it's mid to late 17th or early 18th C (baroque), but that's no guarantee as to when it was painted. Once a style is out there, anyone can copy it any time.

A photograph of the back of the painting will help with age. If you can get a close-up of the canvas or board on the back, even better.
