I live in VA too but out in the Piedmont these days. Once upon a time this was how I did the Potomac and the Bay. (not a photo of me but did have this sail color combo at one time)

BEER! That first sip of cold beer on a hot afternoon, as good as sex, a lot easier to get!
GEE WIZ, what's wrong with you people? If it wasn't for beer, we might not even be here! It was humans answer to preserve grain for thousands of years! Basically liquid bread!

    (despite the un-presuming decor,)

SBSVC, yes, i hear you, it's a hole in the wall type place no doubt but i love it, been there since the 1940s. And, i would argue one of the best seafood restaurants in america, at Chrisfield, it's ALL about the food, as it should be.

King, without beer, millions, perhaps billions of human beings that are here today would not be here without beer in our past.

Beer was safe when the water wasn't. I used to like the dark stuff, but these days I like being able to walk so I don't drink much. OTOH other than stuff in hard shells (oysters, mussels, etc ) I never met a seafood I didn't like. That includes squid, especially dried and coated in hot pepper. It's a Chinese snack food a Taiwanese fried gave me once. After that I went and got my own....

You know, Evelyb, when I was growing up, the shellfish we NEVER ate was mussels.

We'd watch the seagulls pick up whole mussels & drop them, over & over again, onto the rocks, until they cracked open. The seagulls always seemed very happy with their feast.

Meanwhile, I guess we must have thought that mussels were strictly seagull food. I never even tasted one until adulthood, and I've loved them for years now.

I'm sad that I can no longer eat raw clams & oysters, though. (It has to do with medical issues, and it's been many long years since I've been able to have either one.) I used to LOVE those things! (sigh...)

I don't like beer. I'm a wine person. My son will ask me to pick up some beer for him sometimes and he'll say "Get a lager." and I say "What the heck is the difference between IPA, lager, ale, etc.?" Can't drink the stuff.

Yes, I like wine too, but why anyone would drink something dry I just do not get. ;)
I'm ALREADY thirsty thank you! ;)

I like sweet wines, Rieslings, Gewurztraminers, even so much as Ice wine.

See! Even they don't know one beer from another and have to have different names for the same thing! ;)

There is something in all beers that I can't stand the taste and stink of whether it's barley, hops or some other effluent. Yuk!
Even worse to have it breathed on me. :p:vomit:

I've never been a fan of beer. I am a fan of NPR though. One of the reports awhile back was the potential brain benefits of hops in the possible prevention of Alzheimer's.

So from time to time I buy the hoppiest beer I can find (think IPA) and try to drink 8oz a day. I only do it now and then as it's not enjoyable or a proven fact as far as I know.

This is quite a challenge for someone who really doesn't like beer but I've found that if I drink at room temp and add a little water if it's especially foul I can force it down.

Real beer lovers seem to find it from humerous to sacrilegious.

All this talk of seafood is making me long for the seafood restaurants on the Jersey shore in the 50's. Fresh fish, with lots of lemon, and cloth napkins on the tables. Soft clinking sounds as people talked. No TV's.
I think there was one called Bobby Shafto's, like the poem, but perhaps we made that up.

SBSVC. That's it! I'm tickled to see it. My grandfather would drive us all to Ocean City when we visited and we'd shop all morning, go to Shafto's for lunch, then dress shop while he sat in one of those cushioned chairs the women's stores had on hand for patient husbands, and then revive ourselves with ice cream. Thank you so much for your post.
