Art folks,a little help ?

Hi all. Picked this up recently,its 20x14 and seems to be some sort of embroidery . Theres a tag on back that says it was framed in Rome,so could the picture be Italian ? Does anyone know what kind of stitches these are ? Horses normally arent my "thing" but this is so well done it peaked my interest. Any input is always appreciated.

 

Yours is a souvenir brought back to the U.S. by a sailor from the N.A.T.O. base near Naples. We've seen the label before. Framer, from address, actually appears to have been on base. Textile might have been bought there as well. Yes, it's probably Italian, post war.
