Any idea what this weight was used for? Age? Thanks!

Had to google sash weights. I think that is probably it. Thanks! A quick image search does show them more in a rod shape, but I found one (rod shaped) sash weight with the roman numerals similar to this.

    Interesting, thanks!

Sash weights should be marked with the weight - at least they are sold by weight. You have to have the correct counterbalance for the weight of the sash.

    Hi,
The 5 or 6 houses that I have restored I have never seen the weights marked like that I have seen some that shape but never marked. Of course the only three states that I have restored in are PA, NY and NY.

I have found similar in demolition of 1890-1920 houses in the twin cities area. If you found it on a boat, they were most likely using it as a downrigger weight.

    Hi Fenton,
Wind mill weights were usually much heavier than just 8 lbs, My one pig weighs in at 55lbs. They were needed to counterbalance the wind speed. The bigger the vanes the heavier the weights.

Do you think that a single weight like this would be worth listing? Architectural salvage interest? Hopefully would fit in the flat rate large priority, lol....

Yes, list it. Anyone who has dropped one of their weights down into the nether regions will want one to replace it (said the woman who did just that)

Nervous it would just rip through that, but worth a try maybe! It has that point on the end so would have to somehow wrap, too. Would certainly give a number of postal clerks pause, going to pick up such a light item and then...

2 liter bottle and flatten it.
    Slit across the very top.
Leave the cap on and tape the slit firmly.

As soon as I hit post I knew someone would think that. Nether regions of the HOUSE. Like into the creepy crawly crawl space full of spideys.
