Featured Globe with Stand

This globe was donated to the house during restoration and we believe it is of the 1950s. The stand the globe sits on is hollow and we believe it holds a book...but we're not sure what book! The hollowed section measures 27 cm long by 3 cm tall. Any help towards finding "the book" would be much appreciated!

P.s. In case you're wondering, that is the Marshall's kitchen in the background!

The globe shows pre-partition India (no Pakistan), which means it can't be later than 1947.

Remarkably, tomorrow, Aug 15, is the 70th anniversary of partition. An Indian man once told me that within 48hrs of partition more than a million people died in sectarian violence.

What does Europe look like? That might help to narrow the date.

 

Have you tried pushing various places all around the base?
Perhaps the least likely is best.

 

I assume you are asking what book was originally housed in this now hollow space.

Here is an atlas that looks like it came with a globe. Wrong year, and you'd have to check if it fits.

I think I'd prefer an older one, those should also be around.

 

Old atlases, even better, tend to sell for cheap.
