I apologize if I am posting this thread in the wrong area, I wasn't sure where to post it. I have this oval box. I think it is black lacquer but am unsure. Also, in helping with my search, what would you call the picture on the top of the box? It might help me narrow this down somehow. It measures 6.5" long x 5" wide x 1.75" deep. I greatly appreciate your help.

The lady looks like the work of a pre-Raphaelite painter.

    Hi Crystalina,

About 10 years ago I came across oval jewellery box with very similar design. I purchased it for 2 $ in Chinese shop (modern). It was made from black plastic and varnished on all surfaces. Lacquer was also mixed with small amount of metallic paint and this layer was applied on the box and lead sides. The appearance was exactly the same as on your photo. Size from memory was 15 cm x 11 cm.

I sanded lead’s top layer off (flowers) and painted my own design on plastic and varnished it.

So your box might be of the same origin and have a decoupage (paper cut out) decoration on the top. Magnifying glass can reveal printing dots pattern.

In any case your box is very pretty :)

Thank you everyone, that helped alot. I appreciate you help! The explanation of the lady on the top also helped as I couldn't figure out what you call something like that. I love learning somethings new!

She's a bit earlier than Pre-Raphaelite, I'd think. But certainly reminds one of Leighton's 'Flaming June.'

I should add that... Leighton's 'Flaming June' is a Pre-Raphaelite work.
