Can't decipher the first word, but the second word might be 'ware'.

I can only find this octagon shape in the brown glaze. Yours has the hanging killed game animals, does it have the eagle spout?

    Here are some links.

Rockingham Pottery; Harker & Taylor?, Pitcher, Hound Handled, Game & Spread Wing Eagle.
A Rockingham pottery pitcher, possibly Harker, Taylor & Co, East Liverpool, Ohio, hound handled, game and spread wing eagle on spout.

Yes, but how many of those would scratch their names into the bottom? I'm voting for hobbyist.

IMG_9996.JPG No eagle on the spout.
The last word does look like "Ware". Would a hobbyist use it in his signature?

If his/her surname was Ware, sure.

Thanks a lot. They have the eagle on the amber version. I'll try to research further.

Yay! I was hoping you'd say that eventually. Glad the eagle is there under all that drippy glaze.

I was thinking about that. Seems like Frank Engle did mostly animal figurines and they are marked with Frank Engle (Studios).
Also, he most likely did original, one of a kind pieces and is unlikely to make a pitcher with already existing design.
Not a lot of info about Alfred V. Lawton either but I'll go with him when describing the piece.
I was almost done with uploding the listing with Frank Engle attribution.

I'm glad you two got to the bottom of this. Good sleuthing!

I looked in the index of Lehner's and none of the names are in there. Not Frank Engle Studios, not Englecraft Ware - Brunswick Ga or Alfred V. Lawton.

I'll scribble this in the margins of the index and also save to my pottery files for future reference.

Englecraft Ware is Alfred Lawton, ceramicist. This is how he signed pieces.
