In the only two images I found of him in an open coat, he's either looking right at the camera or facing to his right.

I am opposed to censorship in any form unless someone is being hurt. Whichever side you feel strongly about in the Civil War, you cannot change history nor should you try to delete it. Maybe publicly honoring the generals of the losing side is anathema to some modern sensibilities, I don't see Lee as being in the same category as a dictator like Saddam Hussein, so I don't think his statues should be demolished. They offer a teaching opportunity. He was doing what he thought was right for his constituents. It's not like he was torturing people to get their property or money. That's my two cents.

But he was backing an institution that promoted kidnapping, enslavement, and murder on a large scale. People have every right to hate and detest that part of history. It's not like everything ended right after the Civil War either. The US really screwed up by waiting almost 100 more years to fix the problems of segregation and do something about state sponsored racism.

There are still plenty of people alive who were treated as second class citizens in the South. Beaten, raped, falsely accused, with no justice to be had. There are still plenty of people who want the South to go back to those times, or even worse. They are using the Civil War and those statues as rallying points. Now they are becoming more vocal because of the idiot president we have.

It's a shitty situation all around, but not surprising in the least.

easy guys & dolls......let's not let this path move us towards breaking the rules..

    rule # 7

    Subjects we don’t discuss here

Basically it’s common sense. Just about every person on the planet has heard the saying – “never discuss politics and/or religion”. Why ? Because it starts fights, arguments and causes nothing but hate and discontent. If you wish to discuss politics and or religion, then go someplace else. We don’t allow it here.

Komo, where can I find the rules?
(Not that I have any inclination to join the discussion, besides, no one wants to hear anyone's two cents worth from across the pond.)

Yeah, good idea to keep politics & religion out of an antique forum, there are plenty of sites on the internet for those topics. The only reason i posted was i read the thread & agreed with one of the posters.

See! I haven't forgotten all of the useless "bloodline" gibberish my grandmother used to spout...............typical introduction to Gram would have gone something such as:

Me: "Grandmere, allow me to present my schoolmate, Thomas Benton Finch"

Grandmere: "Welcome to our home Master Finch. Are you related to the Boston Finchs, or the Van Der Pools through your grandfathers sisters second marriage? No? Ah, it must be the Bar Harbour Bentons through the Marigold Hill, Georgia, branch."

Your Gram must have been from the same era/social class of my ex-husband's Gram. When I first met his family she asked about my parents. I said my mother worked in a shoe shop. Her nose wrinkled and she asked, distastefully, what sort of shoes she sold. I said, oh, no, she works in a factory making shoes. No further conversation. My biggest sin was sitting in the kitchen talking to the cook. I was told "One does not fraternize with the help." Not really why the marriage ended, but it sure didn't help.
