Appears to be a Sheraton single drawer work stand, mid 19th century, for $10. you did well.

Judging only by the style I would place this at least 100 years before the 1950s.

I am with James Conrad here. His answer is correct in every way. Looks like the glass knob may even be original. It is a shame that people no longer see value in such things :(

Yes it is a shame, but to my benefit this time. The workmanship on the legs is absolutely phenomenal. Wasn't sure about the glass pull, but it is definitely an old one.

Drawer construction. Noted a stamped name on the drawer Hugh M Ritchie.

Hand carved dovetails. Secondary wood looks like gum to me.

A handsome piece and a phenomenal deal.

150 years old for $10.00. Crazy.

Yeah, find some crazy cheap stuff at sales in the Des Moines Metro. It needs some work on the top, missing a bit of the mahogany strip on the edge of the top and a small bubble on the face of the drawer. Should be nice when done.

The sad fact is, unless in perfect condition or some other feature like "tiger maple" that is heavily figured, these work stands go for a song at auction, in my area about $100-$200.
In America, these stands came in during the federal era (1790-1830) and were originally called "light stands". Three legged candle stands were just to unstable to hold a lamp filled with whale oil & later kerosene so 4 legged light stands like yours put candle stands out of biz almost overnight. They were built for over 100 years starting about 1800 so there are millions of them out there.

I know. Was planning on keeping this one anyway. Have to hold on to some things, right? I have a store room full of brown furniture I got 20 years ago and can't get rid of at a "reasonable" price.

On the other end of the scale, i offered 2k for this stand almost 20 years ago and was turned down. It's Sheraton & has it's original glass pulls, probably sandwich, tiger & birds eye maple construction. It's STILL for sale 20 years later.

lol, yeah, is. I don't think he cares if he sells it or not, it was "only" 5k
20 years ago, he's asking $6500 now. That top is a single board of birds eye, never seen one that wide in that species. He'll die with that table in his store i predict.
