I found this in a garage/estate sale last week - is it done in colored pencils?
Can anyone make out the last name? (Meudler?)
    Finally...is this a good painting - or a student/week end artist?
    Thank you!

Looks like pastel. Not a great artwork imo, poor anatomy plus she’s hanging in mid air.

    Student/amateur work.
    What happened to the
    foot/right hand/nose, etc.
Terrible foreshortening on the right leg..... and yes, she's hanging in space.
I do like the blue and purple shadows on the face, tho

Looks like the OP signature is signed in pen? Maybe? Kind of looks like it.

It does look like pen. That is unusual as artists typically sign their pieces in the medium they're working in.

Contained in the link: "Peter Mendler was a Pennsylvania artist from Stroudsburg. An article in The Pocono Record, dated 1950, lists Mendler's portrait "Don" as one of the best in show of the professional artists submissions at the annual Wyckoff Art Exhibition."

Neither of these is the work of a student.

Can’t say that I relate to either work although I do like his color sense but no question in my mind that it’s the same guy so good pick since his work does appear to have some resale value.

I can see her left and middle leg, but where is the right leg?

The sitter is wearing a fall. Here's one on a very young Lauren Hutton in 1966.

She looks like she is wearing a fake rubber bunny nose and mouth.

Apparently he was in the annual Wyckoff art show, but art shows are held annually all over(except in 2020!).
Just because it hung in a show doesn't make this guy a fabulous artist...
The boy's awkward bent wrist makes me want to look away.
I'll shut up now before you all get mad at me for critiquing this guy's work....

I don’t think anyone here suggested that the guy was a great talent lol but according to that press, he was acknowledged as a professional artist which IMO suggests that he made a living selling his work. To whom he sold is another discussion.

Pretty much my look in college although I did the wide headband and full straight bangs since the fall never perfectly matched my always short bleached hair.

The Peter Mendler I found in Stroudsburg owned a woman's clothing store. I suspect he was an amateur artist but one who had some formal training.

She's not bathing, with that shoe on. As for beauty, let's say it is in the eye of the beholder. That middle leg looks like a painful condition, I hope she got help.
    I like the background colours.
