    Hello everyone!

We've had this in our family for a good many decades now. My great great grandparents owned an antique shop in Brighton during the 1920s and as far as I know, this was one of the items leftover and since been passed down. I'm under no illusions that it's worthless as it has evidently been dropped at some point in its life and not very well repaired. A couple of the dragon claws have broken off and one of the feet has been visibly glued back on. But I still love it. We just have no information other than the fact it mostly resembles Japanese style satsuma urns. It is clay and it has a hand painted mark on the inside of the lid. But other than that we don't know a thing. Hopefully anyone with better knowledge than me can identify it further?

I think you are correct in thinking Japanese. Not sure about Satsuma. Could originate from another area. I would put the date to mid to late 1800s.

The Foo Dog on top originated in China, and Japan later adopted the use of it.
@Any Jewelry will be able to give a better explanation than I can.

BTW - Welcome to the boards.

Ooh OK that's interesting. I only placed it as Satsuma because it resembled others I've seen online but it's only a tentative guess. Thank you for your reply, I look forward to hearing what others know or think of it.
And thank you, happy to be here.

Huh. I would've expected marks on the bottom, but this is really quite cool! Is Japanese, and early 20th c. I think. How big is it?

Thank you! I love it, but it's roughly 16.5-17 inches tall. So fairly sizeable.
