Thoughts on painting and signature please

It's an old oil and seems to be (a) a very quick sketch by someone who has some idea, or (b) a painting by an amateur who lucked out and achieved a certain "Boys Own" appeal. It came from a Sydney auction some 20 years ago and is rather dusty. The painting is about 20 x 15 inches.

What are opinions please, and especially of the signature. Many thanks for looking.

From the length of his sideburns, l'd guess 1970s.

I think it's a bit older than 1970s, @Debora, despite the sideburns.

 

It just strikes me as similar subject matter to Emms.

Thanks so much, @i need help. I had just found it and was about to post. It's not a bad copy and to me has a quirky charm, so it can continue on a bedroom wall. But how naughty to pretend the signature, when the quality was clearly not there. Seems the fabulous Mr Emms liked the long sideburns ...
