Pocket icon missing its case. The Annunciation by the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin.

It has two holes in the back (at the top), so I think it had one of those watchamacallits with two small nails and a triangular wall hanging thing on the back. (I know....)
Given its size it could have been meant to hang in a small space like a monk's or nun's cell.

    Picture hook thingie. ;)

That's possible, it may have also been sold generally to Catholics. Our church used to sell all sorts of tat to the faithful.

I was thinking that if it opened it was a Daguerreotype case.

    Hope springs eternal.;)
But in this case just a nail to secure the metal plate to the wood....
And I think it is a bit more recent than Daguerreotypes.

I thought it was an angel complaining to the lady that the marijuana plant she just bought turned out to be oregano.

Kind of like the scent of the weed that wasn't oregano? :cat::cat::cigar::cigar::cigar:

I was going to say these sorts of bits are usually silver-plated these days. I bet this one was tinned

It's the feast of Annunciation, which is celebrated around Holy Week among Catholics.
