    Hey folks,

    First time poster here.

I picked up this (antique?) buffet from a shop having a renovation in Sydney, and wondered if anyone could help place it in time, and possibly attribute a value to it.

Happy to share more photos if you need them.

    Many thanks

I would say it is early Art Deco - transitional, as those mid-1920s feet haven't quite caught up with the rest of the piece.............

Pictures of the sides of the drawers, hardware (screws, nails, etc), the BACK and information on whether it looks like solid wood or not, how thin it is... ANY label is very important. If you can find an unstained/unfinished portion that'd be great too.

Close ups of that wear/chipping would be awesome, it'd show the wood underneath alongside the finish!

A lot of lamination problems - don't really know if you'de want to spend the money to get that repaired. It's definitely seen it's better days. :(

When I lived in Sydney these were known as Sideboards.
Yours looks to be late 20`s early 30`s
I can`t give them away here.

Not a fan, usually, of these quasi-deco pieces, but I think this one has some style. As Brad says, the work/cost in refinishing might be prohibitive.

I would just "Olde English" dark polish it - over and over for about a week. Might take a full bottle (wear gloves). Unless it is going to be the star of a room, it should pass as "acceptable". I've even blended the small missing bits of veneer - they only show up upon close examination.

Thank you for the responses everyone, glad you could place it.

I'll see if I can pick up some of that polish and see where we end up.

I collected it from a bar, which would explain the damage.

Agree with the 20s-30s dating and likely English unless similar was made in Australia. I have no knowledge about the furniture industry there or if one even exists. The scuffs and scratches are not hard to touch up. The veneer losses are not that hard to fix but it is a tedious process and would take awhile. Not worth paying someone to do but, if you can do it yourself, a satisfying project to undertake.
