The trumpet handle is also a spout.

    Does anyone have any thoughts?

I'd say a stoneware bong or water pipe!

John, how big is it? Could it be a bean pot or a French onion soup pot?

i think a wood or metal stick went into the handle and it was used to pour.....liquid !

Does it have a spout, or is the top rim just kind of irregular? I agree it's for pouring. The shape is wrong for soup. Did you ever say how big it is?

There is a very small lip. I don't have the exact size but it is approximately 15cm tall. My friend found an identical one sold at auction as a posset pot but I remain unconvinced that that is what it is.
