Old? Carved wooden box

any idea what the origin of this woden box is and when its made? And what type of wood is used and how to maintain/ clean it?

Looks Art Nouveau.

If it didn't have the inside panels I'd say a 'stoofje' (sorry guys, don't know the English word, Rec knows what I mean) to keep your feet warm. If so, there would have been a small ceramic bowl for hot coals inside.

 

The people of the listing below call it a foot warmer. But that is without the inside panels. Yours, I don't know.

Thanks AJ. Its 12,2inch (31cm) long,
7,9 inch (20cm) wide and 4,5inch (11,5cm) dept. I have never seen a stoofje with a key but maybe it was mounted later.

 

it smells a bit heavy. how can I neutralize it?

 

I usually put bicarbonate of soda inside, in a glass. Some people use cat litter, if they have a cat.

 

Maybe a stoofje turned into a jewellery box? That would also account for the inside panels.
But maybe one of the others has a brilliant idea of its actual use.

If you have a jenever glass, half is enough. (the bicarb, not the jenever ) Leave it in until the smell is gone.
