Pediment on Display Cabinet Seems Off. Right or Wrong?

I came across this piece at a small thrift shop in Tennessee. Appears to be Rosewood with Satinwood Marquetry.

Correct me if I am wrong (and it’s quite possible I am because this is my rookie season), but does the pediment look “Off”? There is something about it that doesn’t flow/look right. It was almost impossible to access the back of this piece to check for obvious signs of merging or alteration. The place was stacked with items and I would’ve caused a landslide had I tried.

The owner of the thrift shop had just returned from an estate sale in Brentwood/Franklin, Tennessee. That is where he procured this along with three other pieces. Almost all the pieces he had purchased were this style. I am thinking this piece is circa 1890(ish) but that pediment/top Mirror part is throwing me.

Could somebody be so kind as to provide any feedback they might have about this piece? Especially the pediment.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

WOW!!!! Sorry to say, but there is WAY too much stuff on that item and way too much stuff AROUND it as well to be able to give any kind of opinion!!!! And I would hope you would not consider purchasing without the dealer willingly clearing everything away from it so you can make your own educated appraisal from various angles, sides and bottom (and take MUCH BETTER pictures!!!)!!!! Sorry to sound so critical, but one can hardly see your item in question.....:(

He’s coming in tomorrow to clean it off. It’s a vendor booth situation at this place so the lady working desk said he’d have to do it. I was tempted to clear off myself but chose to wait for him. Those are the best I could get with all the junk around. I’ll post more after tomorrow.

Hard to tell from these small photos. Looks OK to me other than the possibility of it missing something at the very top.

Annpan Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.

There are many different designs for chiffoniers you need to check if there are any dowel holes on the top rail to see if it is missing a pediment. It looks to be inlaid Edwardian, Rosewood.

Thanks so much. I was thinking that too about the mirror. Once I get a really close look at it today I think I’ll have a better idea and will be sure to post more pictures.

I should get a pretty good look at it today. It was so surrounded by other things I would’ve spent a long time clearing a path. I’ll be sure to post updated pictures after I visit again today. The guy selling it is clearing as we speak.

Agree that it's Edwardian, date ca. 1910. Looks to be missing it's pediment; otherwise, as Brad noted, it looks OK. Nice piece, actually, especially if he has the pediment somewhere.

Yeah....that’s what I am worried about. I am concerned this piece may have undergone a “refreshing” years ago and they changed the top and popped in a mirror. It is my understanding this (and several other pieces) were procured at an estate sale in Franklin, TN. I doubt he has the original pediment if in fact the original is missing.

At $100 I am potentially willing to take the gamble but not totally there yet. Meeting with vendor soon.

Do you think the design is satinwood? Or could it be something else?

Annpan is probably right: rosewood with satinwood inlay. It could be walnut; it's kind of hard to tell.

However, I'd call this an etagere rather than a chiffonier. An excellent deal for $100, unless you're a purist about antique pieces. It's functional in any case, and the inlay is beautiful!

I think the mirror is original to it. Think this a pretty good buy at $100.00 if for yourself and in good overall condition.

I agree. I believe it’s an etagere. It’s gonna need a little work but I think for $100 it’s a great piece and I have just the place for it. The inlay is in very good shape. Some people don’t like these pieces but I love the look of it.

He wanted $200. I just thought that was too much for it’s condition. The main/most important parts are in great shape but there is one spot I’ll have to have a specialist repair. So he agreed to $100

It won't get any better than $100. That seems crazy low. Perhaps you can have a pediment made for the top and stained to match with the money you save.

Alix, in your post (#14) above, do you realize that you just said the magic words for being excited about an item such as this?

To my way of thinking the "magic" words being "and I have just the place for it.";)

Yeah...this guy really had no idea what he had. There are some people who use that to hook you and others who genuinely think stuff is ugly junk and sell it dirt cheap.

Amazing that these places want all the $ but don't give a gerbil's a** about degrading the item that is supposed to be SO valuable. :p

Yes and then you would've potentially broken something and owned that too. :p
