Any ideas on who the girl might be??

22x26 frame. The frame is super heavy.

 

I finally learned how to use my "Google lens". But when I take a picture of her it pops up with just similar paintings. There's no signature.

 

Painting or print? Have you looked thru a loupe at it? If you see 'dots' it is a print.

The amount of foxing is pretty bad, unless it is dirty glass over the top of it.

The duct tape has to go!

 

Haha.. ya, when I took it off the wall I realized the duct take was just barely holding the picture and glass in place. There are no dots and it's definitely a canvas painting.. I love the frame. Here are some better ph otos

Is that really canvas......or burlap ??

 

In your second set of photos, am I right assuming you removed a very dirty glass?

Still seems there is a lot 'foxing' going on.

Can someone with more experience with foxing answer this question: does foxing only appear on paper, or can it appear on canvas/burlap?

Laura, since you think this is a painting, what is your guess on the medium used; oil, watercolor, pastel, etc.?

 

What is foxing?
Foxing appears as dark spots, brownish (never any other colour which isn’t darkening of paper) in paper or cloth documents, but not on leather stuff. What we cannot deny is that oxidation plays a significant role, and its consequent acidification and the derived cellulose weakening propitiates microbial growth.
Evidence also shows us that environmental exposure to oxygen is –if not its direct cause– a remarkable catalyst, since usually it is most pronounced in the most exposed areas (edges of the sheets, covers, book-edges…).

 

yes, I did take it out of the glass and it does appear to have brown spots on the picture.. Thanks @Rec for explaining what foxing was.. it makes since that it could be from oxygen. Like i said when I went to take it off the wall, it just about fell out. I think my mom had hung it on the wall so many years ago that it was just weight and friction that was holding the picture in. I will take some more pictures because I see what you mean asking if it is on burlap. let me check.

 

It's looks like someone could have glued the canvas to the burlap. I downloaded a loupe app and took some really good close ups. The foxing is pretty bad on it. I'm not familiar with paints so my daughter in law is gonna see if she can tell. The tag on the back of the painting said antique pastel.. I think I just assumed pastels.

 

sorry- not glued down.. it's held down to the burlap with those wooden blocks..

My grandparents owned an antique store about 60 years ago. I'm assuming she was the one who wrote on the tag "pastel panting" I don't know very much about paints. I took some better pictures. Can you tell any better??

 

Makes you wonder what's on the burlap underneath.

 

Those are very good photos, @Laura1969 -- I also like the painting a lot. At first I was wondering if it could be a portrait type that was popular in the mid 19th into early 20th century called a "solar enlargement" or "crayon portrait." They are drawn, painted, or colored over a light photograph that was projected onto the base, which was usually paper. If this one is on canvas, I don't think it is that.

I love it! It's beautiful.

 

From the closeup view of the edge, it looks like the painting may be on a heavy paper, which was then mounted onto the canvas/burlap. The little blocks may be there to act like a mat, holding the glass off of the surface of the painting. I can't tell what the medium is, except that it does not look like pastel. Perhaps gouache, which would be more typical on paper. Some of the brown specs may be foxing, but some may be caused by the artist applying a glaze (not varnish) during the painting process that picked up and scattered some of the darker pigments already applied, particularly in the area around the eyes.
