There's a place I used to go where there were one or two spaces that it seemed the vendor literally came in with little red wagons of stuff and dumped it all on the floor! You couldn't get in the spaces ever!
WHY the facility put up with this I've NO clue. They couldn't have been selling anything and the liabiilty alone... :p

So I identified what is causing the top piece to feel so unstable. The dark rod on right that attaches to main piece of hutch is broken. This is causing a majority of weight from hutch/top to redistribute to the left. Having Restoration Specialist Visit tomorrow to discuss options. Posting another pic in separate post of marquetry.

Piece is too unstable to move to photograph back. But the lower compartment opens up and has no backing...rest of cabinet does have consistent backing. 5C4EA356-21E4-4F98-9ADB-351DE8909973.jpeg

You could put a piece of wood on the back of the open back, then try to match the stain.
    Or
You could cut a piece of cardboard a little larger than the hole, cover with a brocade or silk fabric, then staple to the back of the cupboard.
The etagere that I have - the inside cupboards are lined in what was once a yellow silk, now faded.
    Or
You could just leave it open.

    As for the instability.
What does it mean the top lifts off? The whole top with the mirrors?

When we moved, my husband took the mirrored back off of mine. The spindles in front should have a screw top and bottom, and the back should be screwed on.
Hopefully yours is just a matter of tightening it up.

    Lovely piece.
