What is this? Any info??

    Hi, I know that the other instrument is a thermometer, but what's the thing with the sphere? Some sort of balance? I tried searching for the writing engraved on the plaque, but couldn't find anything. Any info appreciated.

    I was at the doctors once and he took one of those out but I ran like hell and never did find out what it was...

    The printing in that white rectangle on the outside of the box appears to be a name and address.....after keying it in, a location of sorts seems to come up in a place called SEVENOAKS.......
