#01.JPG #02.JPG #03.JPG #04.JPG #06.jpg #08.JPG #09.JPG #10.JPG #11.JPG #12 bottom.JPG Got this cute guy about 3 years ago in a auction box lot. I am having problems figuring out what it says on the back. He is approx. 9" (23cm) tall and complete with his original pipe. Actually in very good condition with a couple small chips. I am thinking that he as from the 1930"s chalk ware and perhaps given as prizes at carnivals??? What I think I am reading on the back on one leg is Venice Dol Cal (perhaps where it was made ??) and I am having a real problem making out what it says on the second leg. The first word is By and then B something.... I want to sell him and need to know if I am right in my thinking before I post him. I appreciate any help. Or new direction to finding info. Thanks. #01.JPG #02.JPG #03.JPG #04.JPG #06.jpg #08.JPG #09.JPG #10.JPG #11.JPG #12 bottom.JPG

Wild-eyed guesses but . . . in your two photos before the last photo I "think" I am reading "Menicedo Cal" and on the other I "think" I am seeing "Barn(?) Game(s)?" maybe.

It "might" be a local (or even traveling) carnival/fair game prize. ;)

Thanks guys. It is a very hard one to come up with. Do you think it is chalkware? and from the 1930"s ???? Or when do you think it was made?

Given the history of the Popeye cartoon character and the Thimble Theater strip in which he first appeared in 1929, I'd sat your 30's guess is accurate.

I have done more research and have found ones that list as Venice dol Cal, but non are signed as this one is. Still having no luck with the other mark. Tried B Gate, and Barn Games with no luck........ I guess I just keep looking. Thanks everyone.
Thanks KingofThings. I am going to be selling it. I am just not sure of price yet. You can send me a message with a offer I can not refuse.......

I think the signature reads " By ..?.. Gitty "
Take a look at the white "shadow" above the etched part which seems easier to read... also the tail of the "y" curves under the surname, like an underline.

First name could start with B or D. Bana, Dann... Dana...?
