What about a fan or a pair of chopsticks? That ought to be pretty easy.

    500-1000 Aussie dollars?
Japanese antiques are beautiful, anything is good. Ask around for a reputable shop and let them advise you. Try outside Kyoto rather than in Kyoto, for a better deal.
I think @Antique Inishie could advise you, but I haven't seen him around for a while.
Another one of our Japanese members is @nokita , who I haven't seen here for months.

The main rule is buy what you like. If it's cool and you're going to live with it yourself, what it's worth on the resale market isn't all that relevant. Buying for resale ... buy something the baggage gorillas can't smash to bits!

a nice older Ikebana basket would be a good purchase that wouldn't break the bank..

Chris, I've only been to Japan once, and it was a very long time ago... (1980!)

What I bought for myself then was fine china - full service for 16. Back then, having china (and silver) was a real thing! Even paying the postage & duty, I spent less than half what it would have cost to buy it in the US.

What would I buy NOW (especially since I have TONS of china!) ? For myself, I'd buy whatever tickled my fancy, particularly if I'd never seen anything like it here at home. (I'd probably also be looking for cool silk fabrics.)

Were I buying stuff to SELL, I'd buy ANYTHING "current Japanese pop culture": pop art, toys, etc. (Even better if it's different from the "American" version: think Pokemon, for instance.)

Just my 2¢ - but WHATEVER you do, and whatever you buy, have FUN!
