Hopi Canteen

    Does anyone know of a good research site I am trying to figure out the artist of a Hopi Canteen at Least I think it's Hopi. It's Acoma Polychrome an the design looks Hopi. TIA IMG_1703.JPG IMG_1704.JPG IMG_1705.JPG

    It's Acoma. Acoma and Hopi are totally unrelated tribes. This design is typical of Acoma pottery from that time period, it's generally referred to as a "rainbird."

    Canteens like this were popular tourist items, and a number of Acoma potters were working during this time period, but virtually none signed with their names, so it's going to be difficult to identify who made this.

    The definitive reference would be The Pottery of Acoma Pueblo, by Dwight Lanmon and Francis H. Harlow, which has a very complete historical account of Acoma pottery.
