I am curious - what kind of "carbon dating" would be useful for ceramic/pottery material? As far as I know, carbon dating is only effective for "organic material" not for things made of earth, clay, etc. Just trying to learn here.

I don't see a picture of the bottom, but so far I agree with studio, or maybe even, gulp, student.

It can be used for some kinds of ceramics, if organic materials were added during the making of a pot (added strength), or when it contained organic material.
    Here is some info:

There are other, newer ways of dating ceramics though.

I certainly think it would be good for Dan to keep an open mind.

Hmmm, good idea but don't think it will happen. He already KNOWS what he has. Why he came to ask for opinions is anybody's guess.

It looks modern (or vintage) to me as well, but I'm interested in hearing any results from experts.

Hate to be harsh here, but this is not an old piece, looks very like studio pottery as @verybrad suggested. In my opinion, you are overthinking this. The form is somewhat reminiscent of Shigaraki or Iga waste water jars but hundreds of artist-potters have created pieces inspired by that aesthetic, but almost all of them have a practical as well as decorative uses. Yours, IMO is too skinny to be of any practical use and the domed lid is very impractical and unstable indeed. No doubt that's why it is already damaged.
