Thanks. There are a few references to past auctions of his work but no information on the man himself. Don’t seem to be too many pieces out there by him which I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. Mine is on a plinth of around 15 inches long, just to give you an idea of scale. She remains a mystery unless anyone else on here has ever come across him ?

Probably you have already seen this:

    https://www.invaluable.com/artist/stiaccini-umberto-ni4usx742x

Only tidbit is that a piece auctioned by Christie's had 'Florence' after the name. Frustratingly, if you navigate to a button for 'More about this artist' it just takes you back to the page with all the auctions, no bio at all.

Yes thanks. I went up that blind alley. It’s so frustrating because the man obviously had great talent. Wish I knew a bit more. Who was she modelled after ? Things like that. Don’t know if it’s a good thing from a value point of view that there don’t seem to be many of his works around ? I have named her Daisy. I don’t know why , it just seemed to suit her. We absolutely love her

Ah, but she's Italian, so how about the equivalent, Margherita?

She looks like an Isabella to me, because she is 'bella'.:)

Margherita Isabella actually sounds quite nice.

On this site we usually don't ask what people paid for an item. I would not be comfortable with that question either.

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that it was a faux pas. I'll avoid doing it from now on.

Richard Porter: I think your response to how much you paid was entirely adequate.

You could have told us you paid $20. How would we know?

I think you are creating an issue where there isn't one.

You think this could be handled in a more gentlemanly fashion? That could start with you. Let it go.

I think you are being rude, but if you can't let this go, I can.

    Putting this thread on ignore.

I've looked at sales records for Stiaccini sculptures and see more than a few sold at Christies and the like and none of them have any biographical info. listed. So they sell well on their own merit. It would be nice to know who Stiaccini was but it wouldn't affect the value.
I also tried Boolean searches in Italian and found nothing on the artist.
My take on the value of the one shown here is that it might do better than $3k in the right auction and twice that in a retail gallery.
    A real nice piece!

Thank you for doing that research it is appreciated. I love finding out more about pieces but I think what you say about this piece standing on its own merits is true. Thank you

Well, this certainly spiraled out of control, didn't it? I now wish I had 'spoken up' last night, but at the time it looked as if moreotherstuff was going to be able to defuse the situation - and I'm not that skilled at putting cohesive thoughts together - but now, I'm sorry I stayed quiet.

I am surprised when someone I only know casually asks the cost of something that was obviously expensive ... chalk it up to differences in how/where they were raised, and I try to give a very vague answer, to avoid being rude (and move on to another subject).

Did everyone else miss where Richard DID answer the cost question? After Barn Owl gave his/her estimation of a price (not worth) around $1500+, Richard answered "A little more but not much." There ya go! Answered, in a vague (not rude) manner.

I hope that @Richard Porter changes his mind and sticks around, but wouldn't blame him for leaving after the 'welcome' that he received on his first post to the forum.

What strikes me as humorous about this whole mess is how some of the 'old guard' here have made disparaging comments when newbies come along to the forum wanting to know the value of their item and nothing else ... and Richard gets run off when he didn't once bring up the cost/value of his item but tried to genteelly deal with the question when asked.

I'm sorry for Richard's experience here. Richard you had a lovely piece and it was a joy to share it with you.

We do discuss values here, but for a number of legitimate reasons, we normally don't ask about purchase price. It has no relevance. It gives zero additional information and has the potential to embarrass the buyer, etc.

People sometimes volunteer what they paid--totally different.

I have also noticed a trend with new members being chastised for this or that on their early posts. I hope for the best for this site.
