Type of Hammer?

Can anyone identify what type of hammer this is? I am baffled because of the shape of the head, square shaped striking surface, and long handle. It is 14 1/2" long. It is not a framing hammer. It is too small. It has a claw so it must be for nailing or tacking.

My grandfather and father owned a construction company. My grandfather came to this country in 1910. My other grandfather was a tool and die maker. He had a lot of tools. I do not know who owned this hammer. I assume it was owned by one of my grandfathers or by a great uncle.

In my online research, I found that someone has a "Hammer Museum" up in Alaska. I thought that was interesting. What one tool is the most important tool to mankind? I think one could argue, "the hammer."

I love being part of this group!!! I had no idea. After I read your post, I looked for farrier hammers online and I believe you are right. Some of the new farrier hammers available are a similar shaped head. I get so much from this group. I wish I had some knowledge that would help someone in this group.
