Could be a bulb starter dish. You'd put tulip bulbs in shallow dirt to start them in the house before planting outside. It's quite lovely. Here is what it would look like with bulbs and I've taken the liberty of putting yours in as a full image.

Of course, looking at it enlarged, one wonders if it was a child's potty. What is the size?

Does the hole in front go through to allow pouring liquid out of the bowl?

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies. Sorry if I have posted this reply twice, it didn't seem to work the first time! It hasn't got a hole in the front, I originally thought it could be a potty but thought it wouldn't be sensible to have a potty made of pot. Someone I showed it to said it could be a Royal Dux pin tray but there isn't a Royal Dux mark.

Welcome! It's not Royal Dux - Royal Dux is quite clearly marked. Royal Dux did some pieces in this style but as you noted they are not marked like this. Many of these Art Nouveau Amphora pieces weren't really meant to be used very often, if at all. They were more regarded as art pieces. I wouldn't get too tied up in its intended function. Lovely piece although it seems to need a good cleaning. Should make the colors pop a little more. Looks like there might have been something in the girl's hands at one point?

Of course it's not a potty--that would be too painful. And the idea it might be Royal Dux when it's clearly marked otherwise.... Does anyone need more coffee?

Reissner, Stellmacher & Kessel made several different shaped bowls with various things attached. Dragons, snakes, women. I've never seen them listed with a purpose, only as "bowls" and, as Don said, were considered as art more than function.

Thanks Don, I'll give it a clean and see what colours come out! I never thought about her holding something but i'll take a closer look at it. I don't know a thing about it - just opened a vintage shop 5 weeks ago so kind of new to this sort of thing :) It was something that came in a house clearance. I just wondered if it was used any anything in particular, didn't know how to even describe it. It's got little holes in various places so i wondered if it was some sort of water feature but i can't see anywhere for the water to get in :) Thanks for your help everyone!
