There were no ships like that in Anglo Saxon times.;)

In the early times of Christianity in the Roman empire, Roman Christians referred to the old polytheistic religions as Paganism.
But I think ulil may have meant Neo-Paganism, a term for beliefs that are inspired by old pre-Christian European religions. There are countless different Neo-Pagan groups, based on different spiritual beliefs, also in Slavic countries. There is an important one in Bulgaria, can't remember the name, but it isn't relevant to your painting anyway.:)

Anyhow, I think ulil referred to the old Slavic costumes, which are probably meant as an indication of the period the story is set in.

What reminded me of the anglo saxon was the leather straps on the bottom of the legs around the tights and the boats. I will see if I can find a picture later.

Those were worn throughout Europe, especially in the northern half.
This is a statue of Ambiorix, the Eburonian king that ruled over my part of the world 500 years before the Anglo Saxon period:

The painting is depicting Novgorod Republic time in Russia.

    called “ladiya”

    Timing: IX century... +

Signature block is very hard to read in the photos. Seems that there is an artists’s name and a date on the line below?!
The composition is done by a classically trained artist, but unfortunately hard to tell by the photos if the painting was done in 1890 or 1990. upload_2020-11-19_14-28-38.jpeg upload_2020-11-19_14-32-18.jpeg

Could you take a better quality picture of the signature?
By style, looks like an illustration for a filmstrip fairy-tale to me.
Or a student illustrator's work, most propably.

    Hi BTZ64,

It is very unusual painting based on Russian folklore. It might be from Sadko bylina. The main character (Sadko) is an adventures merchant (in another version of bylina he was a poor musician first) from Novgorod. It might be him standing in a doorway with merchants' ships in background. Other characters in painting are wealthy Novgorod merchants, jesters and blind musician. The person at the table must be a head of merchants gild rather than person of a noble blood. He has no royal regales on him or jewellery. The same applies to other party hosts - they are rich but not noble.

This might be a scene when Sadko came to make a bet that he can buy all available merchandise in Novgorod in 2 days (or to catch a gold fish).

Please send better images of the signature - preferably under different angles with flash and without.

It would be easier than to tell if the painter is Russian.
