Any thoughts about maker/origin/age of this face jug, 9 1/2 inches tall? Does not look like any I've seen in my searches. I'm mostly just trying to rule out that this has anything more than decorative value, and this is out of my area. The name on the underside looks like it is written in pencil and I'm guessing not related to the maker. Thanks for any thoughts.

I think the style is known as Southern Stoneware. Don’t know much about it I’m afraid.

Thanks John. I figured probably Southern.

It's a jug with a face and looks like Southern pottery, but it doesn't really look like a Southern face jug to me. It doesn't have enough "quirky" if that makes sense. The eyes are really off.

I love these ugly little things and have a few of them. Most are trying to look like jugs that the Meaders family made. It's really not that uncommon to find them signed in pencil, so I looked in my book "Catawba Clay Contemporary Southern Face Jug Makers" and didn't see your maker listed. It's a little book though. :)

I'll see if I can find anything close in my other Southern pottery books.

Thank you Sassafras, I appreciate you taking the time. It did seem kind of plain compared to the jugs I saw in my searches.

I know nothing about it at all, but my goodness it puts a smile on my face. What a fab find.
