    dear all

i would like to find out more about the photo studio that took these photos. googling "Low Fong" + additional keywords like photographer or singapore is not giving me any sensible hits. i think the photo was taken in the early 1900s? any advice on how to find out when the studio was operational?

    regards

Great photos! The only thing I could find was another photo by Low Fong (here). I can't find any useful information unfortunately - hopefully others can help :).

Thanks Aquitaine, you beat me to it!

I tried searching for the address in the original post but came up with nothing. There must be a record somewhere but it's going take quite a bit of digging...

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The photos in the original post appear to be earlier than the photo that was found later and posted above. It's tricky to tell exact years because my knowledge of card mounts is mostly based on what was done in the U.S. Sometimes other countries differed. But I think the original photos posted could date from the late 19th century, and the later one that was found would be from early 20th century.

I've just spent some time looking for information on the history of Singapore photographers. This book was published in 2009:
Jason Toh (author), Singapore Through 19th Century Photographs (Singapore: Editions Didier Millet, 2009) 176 p.

A review of the book here indicates that it's about the scenic photography of the city of Singapore, and says that not much research has been done on portrait photographers of Singapore. I did find that some individual photographers and studios have been researched but didn't find anything about the Low Fong studio. Here is something I found about a different photographer, G. R. Lambert, who started his business in Singapore in 1867 and went into the 20th century. His work would have overlapped with the business of Low Fong. (Note, this link will open a PDF document): http://spm.org.sg/~/media/spm/documents/the originals of gr lambert.pdf?la=en

Man in third photograph has an Imperial mustache as popularized by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany so likely circa World War I.

Likely Sarawak, the Malaysian part of Borneo, both of them. The second one has a very nice Javanese style belt. I hope he got it through trade, not something else....
