Please help identify Chinese cage

I bought this at the local auction to use for newly hatched chicks. About 3.5 feet in length, 2 foot wide, 4 foot high. The "bars" are wood so I know it was not used for rabbits or anything that gnaws. The back and front are matching with sliding doors on each side (middle of item). I believe that the roof may have been originally thatched. There is some very nice carved detail.

My guess it was used for chickens but made for indoor use. Still going to use it for the chicks but curious to know its purpose. Any information is appreciated.

My guess is a small granary or other food storage thing.

 

Thanks, I'm leaning in that direction. The slats were to keep animals out, not in. But the peaked roof is throwing me off plus it has doors on both sides with limited access to items placed away from the opening.

 

Not a cage for pet bird(s)? Does appear to be meant for indoor use & is decorative as well as functional. Or for really large cricket?

 

Or for a giant weta, native to New Zealand. This one is exaggerated, but you get my drift:
