Looks like someone probably left him sitting out when they were painting their walls...

Aaaaaaand looking a little closer I found a nick under the tiger's chin that shows some whit-ish metal - looks like it is spelter/pot metal. Aaaaaand armed with that knowledge I found these:

    etc...

So looks like he was probably a bookend and at some point got remounted on the base he's on now. I still love him and he'll be my desk's guard kitty.

    I've heard of literary lions...

Cluttered spotted the chip a little while ago:

Indeed she spotted one - but that wasn't the one where I found the white metal - at least not the one she posted a picture of. But it was thanks to her suggestion that I found the one that definitely looked white (on the underside of the mouth/chin - not pictured). She was right on with that suggestion! Thank you Cluttered!

Well, what they say about two heads is not that they cost you twice as much in hats.

Paint is attracted to those materials it is hardest to get off. One of those laws of nature, just like buttered bread always falling with the butter side down.
You can try repeatedly applying oil to the paint spots, sometimes it comes off that way, and it doesn't affect the patina.

try wd40 on a cloth shouldn't effect the patina if its real patina.
