Is this Satsuma? Age? Possibly a partial mark on the base. The neck is leaning to one side, like the leaning tower of Pisa but not quite as bad.

    Yes, Satsuma likely made in Kyoto/Awata, early 20th c, 1920s I guess.

Thank you Mat. For my future hunting, can you tell me what helps determine the age on these?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Looking at it, that Confushusiouses me!!!!!:happy::hilarious::hilarious: But I also think it IS lovely!!!! Even if I know nothing about it!!!! So, Mat, you're saying it's NOT a repro with all of that crazing on the bottom, top and finely throughout if you look carefully???

    Hi Aquitaine,
With the crazing being so uneven and just in spots it is older. If new the crazing would be even and all over.

I happen to know who owned this so I knew it had some age and that it wasn't a repro. I just wasn't sure exactly how old it was. They traveled around the world on buying trips for their department stores between 1910 and 1945. They also purchased antiques for themselves and, they also purchased items that were new at that time.

I'm trying to learn more about Asian pieces. I see pieces at estate sales and, although beautiful, I'm not sure if it's worth the money or not. If it's a bargain, it's worth taking a chance but I "chicken out" on higher priced items. That's why I asked Mat if he could impart some tips

Aquitaine, the crackle glaze is intentional, all Satsuma has crackles, regardless of it's age, and a piece without it is not Satsuma.

Mill Cove Treasures, there is no quick answer, you just get an idea of what is old and what not by looking on a lot of pieces... A good starting point are the books by Sandra Andacht, for example "Treasury of Satsuma", which is a great introduction.
