    It appears to have been given to someone with the initials PB to remember their first communion in 1891, so think you can use that for age.

    European manufacture (language of engraving, and the pin-set movement), late 1880s/early 1890s (date on engraving), and possessing a solid silver case, of 90% purity.

    That's all I can tell without someone opening the back cover so we can see the mechanism ticking away inside.

    Yeah, looks like a 15 or 17 jewel pin-set European pocketwatch, with a silver case from the late 1800s or early 1900s (say 1880-1910). The case (and possibly the watch, as well) were made in Switzerland. The hallmark you photographed looks like a standing bear, which was a Swiss silver hallmark.

    The movement is marked A R. Any further info there?

    @Bronwen

    The A and R are for adjustment purposes.

    The 17 jewel movement has one unusual quality feature, wolf's tooth winding. Notice the shape of the teeth on the winding wheels. This is fairly rare. Google the term for more information.

    It also has a clubfoot lever escape wheel and a bi-metallic balance. These are routine features.

    What's the significance of the wolf's teeth cogs? I have seen them before, but I don't understand what makes them special, apart from the shape?

    They don’t intermesh but slip?

    Anywhere from $100 unserviced to $4-500. That's what my watchmaker sells his standard pocketwatches for.

    Prices depend on where you are and how you are selling. Australia where shangas lives seems to be the world's most expensive place to buy antiques.
    Britain, where I live may be the world's cheapest place for antiques because we have so many of them. Here , I would estimate an auction price at £30-£40, as-is.

    Regrettably so. Australia being an island, stuff has to be shipped in. The price go SKY HIGH as a result.
