I have finally found a spare moment to continue exploring the many boxes left to me by my Grandparents. I found some sketch books this afternoon dating back to 1885. It looks like there were a couple of budding artists on my Grandmothers side
Yes, definitely family members - surname Ruddell. One of the blossoming artists was definitely interested in architecture. I found the below pics amongst the sketches. I also know that a family member designed the old organ for the Melbourne Town hall which I think was two storeys high. I have seen some original drawings somewhere. Not sure if there is any connection. The organ looks like an architectural masterpiece.
I'm not generally taken with drawings of buildings, but these are so delicate & detailed, I'd be pleased with a few framed on my walls.
I really like the second one from the top with the rowboat. Thats a watercolor, correct? Interesting how they dated it in the bottom right but no signature (from what I could see)
agree with @capitulation, IMO the small boat piece is the best, the architectural stuff, while technically very good, hasn't got much in the way of "soul", but I'm sure it paid more bills than the "arty" stuff .. All great stuff though, and a nice discovery!
I really don't know. Any suggestions? To be honest I'm a little overwhelmed with this find This is also my favourite. Yes, a watercolour. I will definitely have this one framed. Most of them aren't signed. Thanks all for your comments
I would think the ones with the lettering are prints. The others might be preparatory drawings for engravers.
