    interesting piece and nice carving.

Looks like it could be India area or such. Think it was painted in the past but the paint all went lost. Looks like it was part of a bigger piece.

Sure somebody else can tell you more.

Would make a great coat hanger :)

Could be, you never know. Only think that a temple piece would be made from stone to survive time. Maybe a inside piece. Or maybe part of bigger piece of furniture?

More likely to be 'home decor'. He's a very popular guy.

From India, a reference to Ganesh(a), lotus flower for the search for enlightenment. Ganesh clears away obstacles on the road to enlightenment, and anywhere else.
A building could have been restored and pieces that were no longer structurally sound, sold off. Or it was made more recently and left out in monsoon rains.;)
There is someone who might know, @Bernhard Grimes . But it looks like he was only here for a short time.

Ganesh figures are also made to be thrown into rivers. My neighbours do that.

What a wonderful gift, and he must have been an interesting man.
No, it looks like a reference to Ganesh. It could be a Makara. Makaras are mythological guardian creatures. They are often carved on entrances to temples in Asia, for protection:

When you upload your photos, click on "Full Image" and they will appear in your post like this instead of tiny attachments that we have to open.

I see what kind of looks like a trunk, but I'm not seeing an elephant. It is definitely weird and probably part of something else that would help it make sense.
