I think you folks can help. Anyjewelry, could you inform about this? It was in a bag of mixed items I bought today. Found a Desert Storm metal bracelet (with two owners names and ranks and army#) as well as some possible diamond jewelry in the same bag so it may be authentic. Any idea the tribe whose style it would be of? The back is deerhide (tanned) from what I can feel and see. Piece is 2ft long untied.

Similar pieces are very common in the Southwest for sale in souvenir type venues with no tribal attribution. I lived in a Southwest tourist town for years and all the little shops had them.

I see. I was holding out hope for it to be an authentic tribally affiliated and made piece.

I've got one of these somewhere too, very similar. Picked up at charity shop in UK. I was hoping mine was the real deal also, our hopes are dashed ihaveolditems but I'm happy to have found out.

I'd agree with Buyingtime, adding that there may well be natives who make very similar items, but without a signature or other provenance, there is no way to tell if the items are made by a native or non-native.

I find those here occasionally too. They're never signed, or at least I've never seen a signed one.

I've never seen a signed one either.....with one exception; I have a friend who makes leather-backed items like these, and hair barrettes, mostly as gifts for friends. She does sign them....but she's non-native.

Sorry, I only just noticed this. But you have the answer already, and I'm with all-fakes. Similar ones are found throughout North America.
If you find just a medallion with a similar design, but with fur trim, it could even be Chukchee/Chukchi across the Bering Strait, in eastern Russia.
And of course Hongkong produces a lot of these, many are bought by Native Americans.;)
