The reel is wooden which I think they stopped producing a while ago.

    the labels say: J & P.COATS
    40
    100YDS
MERCER COTTON FAST COLOUR M.R 510.

Does anyone know roughly when this was produced?

    Thank you

Wooden spools were replaced by plastic in the late 1960s/early 1970s in the U.S. Would assume timing in U.K. approximately the same. Here's an old thread chart off the internet; perhaps it will be helpful.

60s here in the Netherlands, maybe the same in the UK.

That’s perfect thank you, I never came across this and a few others to look up tomorrow so this may help me with the others

The color of the thread on the spool (if any remains) would also be helpful for dating.

What a cool chart! I wish it was short enough to print off! Leslie

I took screenshots of it so I could make it slightly smaller to print. Such a good chart although it’s making me want to collect more from the lists

I've still got lots of those. The older wooden spool threads were wonderful mercerised pure cotton. I think yours is earlier: some of the 60s ones have dual imperial and metric.
