Hi all. Picked up this compote(?) because I fell in love with the hibiscus flowers. Its 4 1/2 high,9 wide. Any ideas on age ,maker? I thought possibly victorian because of the pink and the fact the flowers seem to be hand painted. Any and all input is appreciated.

Oh my goodness, Johnnycb, that is pretty, pretty, pretty.

I'm certain in a more "cultured" setting it would showcase just a few confections, but if I had it more than a few petits fours would be gracing it. ;) :shame:

Very pretty, but I think 1950s or '60s is more likely and possibly made in Japan.

I could see that date,I did get a 50s vibe at 1st glance. I have a huge hibiscus by my front door that blooms gloriously every year,so Im partial to them. :)
I cant help myself,I just love me a "pretty" !

I have an identically shaped compote, same dimensions, made for Curtis Collamore. Years ago I saw these in a Haviland Limoges ad from the 1860's. I suspect yours was made by Haviland, or some Limoges manufacturer, maybe as a blank and possibly decorated by another company, around the same period.

I agree with JB mid to late 1800s. I don't think yours is made by the same company as JB's, because the bottoms are finished differently.
Sorry, can't help with the who made it.

    Absolutely lovely.

I'd go Central Europe, and 1930 onward.

Dang. I’m torn. Can you take a magnifying glass and see if it’s really hand painted or if some looks like a transfer. Check for dots, printed lines, or see if you can discern brushstrokes. It’s the foot and base that’s making me go hmmm...

And from the peanut gallery: I'm going with Japanese mid-century. Something about the colors and the floral depictions seems mid-century decorative to me as opposed to older Limoges or other older European. And I would expect a Limoges piece to be marked even if it's just a blank.

I was trying to find what countries Hibiscus was native to. Besides it probably originating in China, it was also in Malaysia and India. Both countries that England had a strong presence in.

I didnt get notifications this was still active? Thank you all so much for the input. Im going with hand painted, you can see the brushstrokes and feel a slight ridge when you touch the design.

We grow hibiscus like mad here, both the hardy and more tender varieties.
