What is the gem in this ring?

    That would be my first guess, doubly so since the side stones are glued in.

    Maybe meant as an approximation of the sapphire engagement ring Charles gave to Diana & William in turn gave to Kate?

    The first generation Princess Di copies were the same shape and color as hers, only made out of the proverbial glass and brass. This one is similar, but sapphire and diamond rings like this have been around since at least the Victorian era.
