    dear all

i love these dayak motif vases from sarawak. i believe they were bought by my uncle for my mum when he relocated to sarawak for work in the 1960s. the matte finish is much nicer than the glossy finish which seems to be more popular nowadays.

my cousin's friend who has a pottery shop in sarawak told me that they don't make this type of pottery anymore. i was trying to figure out why these are no longer made but he did not seem helpful in that department :( is it very difficult or just tedious as in takes too much time? would it be considered as sgraffito?

Can't help, but wanted to say that they are absolutely gorgeous. The first two are my favorites--but the floral ones are also stunning. With most at over 20" high, must really be something to see.

I hope someone can help you ID these further. Beautiful pieces.

Agree, they are gorgeous. My favourites are those with the traditional Dayak Aso dragons, of course.;)
    Yes, they are sgraffito.
I didn't know this style, but when googling Sarawak Dayak pottery I got mostly the brightly coloured ones, so those seem to be today's taste. I prefer these, the bright ones are too ott for me. These remind me of Dayak carvings on bamboo medicine containers, etc.

Sgraffito is not that difficult, but it takes careful planning and a sure, steady, and confident hand. There is little room for error. And it is time consuming, if done well.

i guess the old master craftsmen have all retired. seems a bit sad that the tradition did not carry on. the tattoo artist of sarawak are pretty awesome in their detailed work though :)
