I don't think so, or at least not because anyone in the US associates it with the country & its current government. Iranian friends I have had, when asked where they were from, have answered 'Persia'. It brings back the pre-revolution days of the Shah for us & sounds sort of romantic.

My mother told me 'Persian lamb' when I first asked about the type of fur, sometime in the 60s. Did not encounter the word Astrakhan until much later, & then while reading about another place & time. Probably makes a big difference whether you are talking to someone in a place like NYC where there are, or were, many furriers or someone elsewhere. 'Swakara' is a new term for me altogether. Always good to have a new word.

I've only seen the name Astrakhan in Sherlock Holmes stories. It's always been Persian Lamb or curly lamb around here.

Quite possibly where I first met it too. One of those words, like miniver, you don't see so much.

I had huge problems when I sold a Persian Pahlavi period necklace on Etsy to someone in the UK.
Even though it never entered the US and the listing specifically mentioned the decade and no Iran, Paypal sniffed it out and blocked the sale, and Etsy Ireland followed. Etsy Ireland has to stick to the US political hysteria about anything from the long history of Iran/Persia, even when it is pre-Islamic Republic.
Etsy also asked me about a Kuchi necklace, because the description in the listing said the Kuchi were a nomadic tribe of Iranian origin. I explained that the antique necklace had never seen Iran, and it was all right as long as I removed 'Iranian'. The Kuchi are now a tribe of no origin.

The ancestors of most US politicians lived in Iran thousands of years ago, I vote we ban them. Only allow those of pure sub-Saharan African or Northeast Asian heritage.:D
Oops, forgot the Horn of Africa, sorry people, just to be sure you're out too, too much Middle Eastern influence

I don't know if I'll ever get the time to list it, I work so much lately, listing on eBay has become so hard.

    Does it fit you?
    It's probably warm.
If anyone asks about it being real, tell them
"No, aren't they doing fabulous knockoffs of the real thing." Or "Synthetics have come a long way, haven't they.";);)

I had a wool 'maxi-coat' (you needed one if you wore miniskirts) that had a shawl collar of what my mother called curly lamb, probably same or similar to what you're describing. It was lovely to pull it up around the face & neck.

Did not realize PP also vetted merchandise, but makes sense since they're responsible for the exchange of funds. Amazing they have algorithms that would pick it up when so much ivory slides through.

As a US child of the 50s, I agree that in my country we call it Persian lamb or Broadtail. If listing in the US the OP should use both those terms plus Karakul and Astrakhan. Why not hit all the bases?
