Is There a Signature Under My Painting's Signature?

I found this large (just the canvas is 46" x 27"!) well done (I thought) painting at a thrift tore today. I tried looking up A. Gil but couldn't find anything, but when I looked to see if there was more to the name I think I see another name behind the first one! (in 3rd photo above and a little to the left of the A. looks like the unusual shaped letter G in his/her last name)
Anybody else see that? What would someone do that?
Is this just a "factory" painting? Did they make them this big?

They made them so big to use over a sofa. We called them "sofa paintings".

It looks a little better than most sofa paintings to me,Im totally not seeing a second signature though.

 

All I see is a chalky looking "A"....there could be more, but it's too undefined....at least to me.......

 

Back in the late 1980's/early 1990's, when we lived in the Washington, DC area, there was a "liquidator" who used to advertise on a local TV station. His company sold "sofa paintings" out of Holiday Inns across the area, usually on Sundays.

The guy in the ad used to suggest that people "Bring in a cushion from your sofa!" in order to allow their salesperson to match it to a piece of "art".

They are big pictures. The other reason they are called "sofa" paintings is that they would take up the whole wall behind the sofa. My cousin had a couple in her living room and her den.

Often, when we respond to a question about a painting, the owner takes offense when we say it's 'factory' art or a 'sofa' painting because people just don't realize how many of these are out there. No one is saying they can't be attractive, but when you have such mass produced work, it really has little value. The names are obscure enough that they almost look like real signatures.

 

Thanks for posting this. The pictures also really reinforce what you are saying. It seems that about half of what we see on this thread is factory art. There are various levels of quality in factory art. What we are seeing in these pictures are not at the lowest end. Factory paintings can be bought for as little as a penny in quantity unstretched. In fact, there are some ebay seller that sell such for a one cent opening bid and make money on shipping and/or optional stretching.

 

That, and they are thrift store finds.....
sure...you can hit a home run.......but even the best batters only hit 3 out of ten...and we rarely see the best batters !
