Are the red knobs on the "table" in any way connected to the soldiers?

Do the knobs make the soldiers move (maybe up and down) or do the knobs "release" the soldiers so that they can be removed from the "frame"???

The two pieces might not have originally gone together.

There used to be a French boardgame called "l'Attaque", which two people played with board pieces representing opposing armies. Each army would have different coloured uniforms.
Just checked, l'Attaque came on the market in 1908. It was based on older games. This could be from something like that.

Stratego was actually based on l'Attaque. It was developed by a Dutch Jew in his hiding place during WWII. But of course when it came on the market after the war, the Dutch were weary of anything war-related. Maybe it did better elsewhere, I know the company still exists. Don't know if it is still Dutch-owned.

I really liked the information Any Jewelry presented. Fantastic starting point! I also have very nostalgic memories of playing Stratego and I still thoroughly enjoy the game (the history on the game was great info too!)

This is an image of a 1970's version of "L'Attaque"

Another picture of the 1903 edition (in a wood box too!) (This boxed version of the game sold for $113USD)

I tried to find the soldier tiles but I have not had success - yet.
    Some considerations to springboard from:

    Skittle game
    Milton's "Soldiers Five"
    McLoughlin's "Soldiers on Parade"

the wooden holder made me think of Mah Jonh but those tiles are more dominoe-like

I'll try to look some more tomorrow.
    Cheers!

Great, Jason. It certainly looks like it is l'Attaque related.

This is for all you Stratego fans out there: In 2015 Jumbo, the Dutch firm that produces the original Stratego, put 'Stratego Waterloo' on the market to commemorate the 1815 battle of Waterloo.
And @komokwa , there is now an online Stratego which has a single player option.:D

Thank you AJ.....but I only play one computer game & that's pinball.
I have to touch the pieces & stare into my opponents eye......to get the visceral experience of the game !!
