    Hello everyone,

I am having some trouble identifying the maker of these 2 different mugs/tankards. One of them has ID markings beneath it while the other one doesn't. Does anyone have any insights? Thanks so much you guys!

The "other one"? as in the one that says Japan on the bottom? I see that one also appears to have a music box inside. Does it work?

Hmmmm, just curious but . . . where did you "find" the stein which shows the "Carriage House" label. For many years (at least 40 years) we have had an always privately owned and operated "Carriage House" shop (the owner used to sell antiques, but I think she now specializes in "giftware") in my area.

Hi guys, thanks for the quick responses!

Bakersgma: I opened it up and from what I can tell the wind-up mechanism seems to be working fine. The issue seems to be the push button that activates it. I circled the part where I can press on it but it doesn't seem to be connected to anything.

yourturntoloveit: They are from my grandmother-in-law. She collected antiques. She lived in Connecticut but we're not sure if that's where she purchased it.

Let me know if you guys need any more info or photos! :)

    Re: "Carriage House"

Just wanted to add that for many years, lots of Ethan Allen Furniture Galleries (stores) have been called "Carriage House", as well.

In addition, back in the 1970's and 1980's, owners and/or managers of individual Ethan Allen store locations used to be able to pick out & purchase whatever "accessories" they wanted to sell in their galleries. (Individual galleries were not restricted at that time to selling only accessories that had been chosen by the "corporate office" in CT. Thus, a store in, say, NJ might have Italian pottery accessories on the bookcase in one of its vignettes - all for sale, of course - while no other Ethan Allen store in the country offered the same pottery.)

(My Mom worked as a designer for Ethan Allen corporate from the time they opened in CT in the 1970's until she retired.)

Is the fact that there is a "Carriage House" sticker on the tankard an issue? I'm new to all this so I'm confused by the conversation.

Also, I'd done some research several months ago. Would everyone agree that is is a Capodimonte Beer Stein? It looks very similar to some of the Mugs I've found on different websites but the logo looks different?

Hello 38Flyer and welcome: I think I agree with you komokwa. When most folks think of capodimonte they think of pottery with attached flowers - vase, console bowls, statuettes, place card holders and such. Manufacturers thought if they included an N with crown mark the capodimonte name would help their items sell. I did find a similar style mug listed on ebay: Vintage Capodimonte Beer Stein Italian Stoneware Forest Drunkard Raised Signed.

I'm a bit late to the party on this one but I think the 1970 on your mug is the date. It actually looks like some kind of composite as opposed to pottery. There were steins and statues that appeared around the 1970's that seemed to be more glazed plaster than anything else. It should be light weight relative to other steins. If you're looking for titles, 38Flyer, I would try Carriage House Made in Italy Beer Stein with Hunter Motif. I would stay away from mentioning any kind of material. The appeal here is as man cave stuff. Leave the price tag on, of course, although I think that price is at least four or five times would it could get on a good day. It's nice but stein values have never recovered from the last recession.
