    Hi, everyone:

I’m hoping somebody might be able to tell me about this set of plastic toys. I believe they’re supposed to be a baseball team, made up of Mickey Mouses (Mickey Mice?). They’re made of thin, blow-molded plastic, that feels like celluloid. On their backs is “JAPAN” and a maker’s mark that looks like a stylized chrysanthemum flower. Any ideas about when these date to? I’m thinking pre-WW2. Also, does anyone recognize the maker’s mark? Thanks.

As far as dating would think almost certainly pre-WW2. That air blown celluloid (or whatever they call it) seems to be an early construction. I have a few Santa Claus figures made similar, mine don't have the Japanese label. It's kind of hard to find this kind of thing because that stuff didn't hold up well, easily dented, etc. and many were tossed.

These are pretty cool, hope you can find more info.

Thanks, Lucille.b. In their day I’m sure they were just cheap little plastic toys (and still are, I guess!) but I like them and find it amazing that something so fragile has survived all these years. If I find out anything more about them, I’ll let you all know.

Cool link, might be same era, but I think that Mickey toy has a thicker, hard type of celluloid. The celluloid in David's set (if I'm seeing it correctly) is that super, super light weight, easily dented with the slightest pressure type. Like if someone accidentally sat on it, the air would just be pressed out and it would be flat. For the Mickey Jolly Cart in the link they must have used a thicker hard type of celluloid or plastic, esp since metal hooks onto Pluto's leg. So might not be the same construction, but what a neat looking toy. Amazing they have the orig box.

    very cool pieces:)
@David Askett @Roaring20s re: the link, the listing is still there, you just have to scroll way, way, way down to the bottom of the page:). Not much information though, but the mark on the one in the listings looks like letters, maybe JD or JB?, they sold for $35 British pounds.

I don't think I've handled the lightweight celluloid. I'll have to look for some, if we ever get back to normal, so I can feel the difference.

Yes, Lucille.b is correct, here, about the figures in my set being made of extremely thin, lightweight celluloid plastic. It amazes me that child’s toys were made out of a material that seems so fragile but maybe, in reality, it’s tougher than I think.
