Featured Oil Painting - Samuel Soboloff

Here's another Canadian artist influenced by the Group of Seven I think.

This one is a little earlier - it's dated 1930. 32 X 40 CM

This is one of my favorites.

I've included a newspaper article from February 1930 which references Soboloff.

I've found a few other newspaper articles of that era, some of the articles referring to a controversy at the time because the Ontario Society of Artists did not include his work in an exhibition, even though it received excellent reviews.

I see a few references to a "Simon" Soboloff also ..same subject matter, similar dates, Russian Canadian, lived in Toronto etc, same guy d'ya think?

 

Yes, I've seen those references to Simon too. I'm pretty sure it's the same person.

Thanks for the reference to the Canadian Jewish Review article. I had seen that one - you're right, it is a good short biography of him.
