IMG_5614 (2).jpg IMG_5615 (2).jpg I'd be pleased if you'd offer an opinion on the signature or the style in the hope of identifying the artist.

I don't think you mean "crone." Crone was once a term used to describe older women who are unattractive to the male eye. It, along with "hag," is now considered to be both ageist and sexist. I see a village woman who is gathering wood.

I can't even tell the age of the woman.
More recently, people have turned it around to mean a Wise Woman. So let's turn it around in this thread as well.:D

If she were truly "wise," she'd have someone else picking up sticks for her!

Being an ancient and ignorant hillbilly I had no idea that 'crone' is a pejorative term.
I guess I won't be asking for nougat at the sweet shop now.

May I say however that to describe the figure as a woman is a bit gender-specific - it could be a genderless person who refuses to identify as anything.
And the presumably-human wood (a term, by the way, which maiden aunts may find distressing) enthusiast may not be from a village - he / she / it / other may inhabit an anarcho-syndicalist commune and find the term 'village' rather oppressive.
However I don't wish to offend so may the fleas of a thousand camels provide a suitable penance for my use of the 'c' word.

But I digress - here's a photo of the back.

Rex, a simple "I apologize. I didn't realize that word was offensive and I won't use it again." would suffice.

you don't sound like an ignorant hillbilly..........which is indeed a term that could be seen as way more offensive than the other term.... Hahahaha!!!!!!!

I an not offended by either..... in this case ! ;)

    Fair enough.
But pray what is the correct modern term to describe older women who are unattractive to the male eye ?
When gazing at the work I wasn't appraising the attractiveness of the wood-gatherer but such knowledge could be useful in the future, unless of course such appraisal is disallowed or any appraisal must result in a 'neutral' or 'attractive' evaluation.

I find it difficult to know right from wrong these days despite being a PC snowflake activist back in the eighties.
Perhaps there's a governing body that nowadays defines what words are okay and what are not that I could apply to for authorization.
I've googled 'thought police' but can't find any address.
Maybe the 'c' word will not apply to my observations in the years ahead as all women become more and more attractive as I age, though I suspect that limiting my attention to women is not appropriate anymore.

Just wondering, how can you tell her age or that she is unattractive? Most of her face is covered, and her body is hidden under layers of clothing. There could be an 18yr old beauty underneath all that fabric.

    You may well be correct.
Most artistic depictions of female peasants gathering faggots (whoops, I mean flammable sticks) or performing other menial agricultural tasks that I have seen are of short, plump, scarfed, elderly ladies (I’m thinking Sicilian paesano or The Gleaners here).
So my assumption was that this image was another such person.
Upon closer examination the face is indeed possibly a totally hot unwrinkled nymphet.
Perhaps the thread should be titled ‘Who drew this’.

I’ve just revisited ‘The Gleaners’ and the ladies are of indeterminate age.
I have offended the sisterhood so my only option is to say ‘mea culpa’ and head off to the drawing room with a water pistol repeating the mantra ‘Im very sorry, it’s all my fault, it’ll never happen again, how can I make it up to you’.

Frankly, I don't think you can, which is just as well, because I don't think you really plan to.
