Hello Boo.. I was going to send you pic of a pair of mine but they are filthy and probably the only items in the house that are not spotlessly clean.
the period of manufacture of Old Sheffield plate was from the invention in 1740 to 1840 when the electroplating process was invented by Elkington.
The marking of Old Sheffield plate was illegal between....(think 1790 to early 1800's), thus no makers marks on your candlesticks, this was because of the confusion created when the marks came to resemble sterling silver marks.
The invention of OSP was purportedly as result of an accident when silver sheet was accidentaly fused to a copper penny, by one Thomas Bolsover, a scale maker.....no he didn,t make scales...that was the occupation of someone who made the handles that enveloped knives and cutlery.
With the advent of the industrial revolution and the development of mechanical steam locomotion the method of producing OSP was improved and enhanced,,,we can thank Matthew Boulton and Stephenson with his invention of the steam engine for that. I can go on for ever on this as OSP is another area of collecting I am fascinated with. STOP...STOP...no more......hope this helps further your understanding and doesn't confuse you...regards...pewter2

A purist would NOT have these items electroplated as they will no longer be what they were...and could not be referred to as OSP candlesticks ..so be happy with what you have...regards ...pewter2
